Speech and language delays can impede a child’s ability to participate actively and effectively in all activities in their home and school environments. Delays can lead to increased problems with behavior, self-esteem, reading, and overall learning. Consequently, it is important to identify and address any speech and language difficulties early. As a parent, you can help prevent the potential negative impact of speech and language weaknesses on your child’s educational and social life by actively participating with your child in speech and language therapy.
There are many potential causes to speech and language difficulties in children. Take a moment to ask yourself the following questions: Does your child have difficulty: · Communicating intelligibly? · Producing specific speech sounds? · Using clear and fluent speech? · Using language to express themselves? · Answering questions? · Completing activities that require reasoning and problem solving skills? · Following written or oral directions? · Reading and/or comprehending written print? · Using appropriate grammar? · Following rules of social communication such as turn taking, topic maintenance, and eye contact? If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, a speech and language evaluation may determine why your child is having difficulty and create an individualized plan to improve your child’s skills.
