There is no standard formula to determine how long a client will benefit from speech and language services. The frequency and duration of services is recommended on an individual basis and dependent on a variety of factors.
To determine the recommended frequency of speech and language sessions, we need to answer the following questions: 1. What are the specific speech and language weaknesses? 2. How do these weaknesses impact the client’s participation in everyday activities? 3. Is the client and family motivated and able to actively participate in therapy and home activities? These questions are answered by completing a comprehensive speech and language assessment with the client and family.
It is not possible to put a time limit on the duration of speech and language services. However, some improvement should be apparent after one month of regular weekly sessions with the level of improvement varying from client to client. If absolutely no progress is made in that time period , the client, family, and speech-language therapist should engage in problem solving to adjust the direct therapy sessions and/or home program. One can improve the positive impact of services by actively participating in the therapy sessions and consistently completing the recommended home activities. Home practice works to practice newly learned skills and promote the carryover of these skills into the client’s everyday communication. Therefore, it is important to discuss any problems with completing the home program with your therapist as soon as they occur. |
